VARANASI, Aug. 25 -- A man wanted in the murder of 22-year-old Shreya Upadhyay, a resident of Marui village under Rajatalab police station, was arrested after an encounter involving the Rajatalab police and the Special Operations Group (SOG), police said. The accused, Punit Mishra, 26, of Mau district, was shot in the right leg after he allegedly opened fire at police while trying to escape. He was taken to the Community Health Centre in Jakkhini for treatment. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gomti Zone, Neetu Kadyan said Mishra confessed during interrogation that he had allegedly killed Shreya at the instance of Vivek Chaubey alias Nikhil, who had promised him Rs.22 lakh. Shreya went missing on August 18 while travelling to Jagatpur College, Rohaniya. Her body was recovered on August 20 from a house near a water tank in Bachhav Pashchimpur under Rohaniya police station. On her family's complaint, police registered a case against Chaubey under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Kadyan formed four teams from Rajatalab police station and the SOG to investigate the case. Acting on a tip-off on Monday that Mishra was approaching Jakkhini from Khaira, Mirzapur, on a black Hero Splendor, police set up a checkpoint near Jamunipur T-junction. Police said he turned back after spotting them, lost control of the motorcycle near Ramaipur Bhattha and opened fire when officers tried to apprehend him. Police returned fire in self-defence, hitting him in the right leg. A country-made .315-bore pistol, one used and one live cartridge, the motorcycle and an iPhone were recovered from him, police said. Mishra allegedly told police that Chaubey had provided the motorcycle for the crime and promised him Rs.22 lakh for killing Shreya.
