LUCKNOW, Sept. 3 -- A two-wheeler rider fell into a nearly 10-feet-deep road cavity on the Lucknow University old campus road early Wednesday. Incessant rain caused cave-ins, uprooted trees, brought down electricity poles and damaged walls at several locations across Lucknow within 24 hours. The rider was rescued by eyewitnesses and taken to a hospital. The cave-in, nearly two metres wide, opened on the road leading towards the IT intersection. LMC executive engineer, Zone 3, Muzaffar Nazmi said officials received information around 8:20 am and reached the spot soon after. "The road belongs to the Public Works Department (PWD). However, on their request, we filled the cave-in after examining the spot," Nazmi said. Officials recovered the motorcycle from the cavity. A preliminary inspection found no sewer or drainage line beneath the collapsed portion. Officials suspect water seepage around metro pillars weakened the soil. Continuous rainfall allowed water to seep into the ground, shifting silt and weakening the road base. The incident occurred less than 24 hours after a road cave-in in Chinhat on Tuesday, where a portion of the road collapsed around a sewer chamber, leaving an opening nearly six feet wide and around 18 feet deep. In Vishal Khand, Gomti Nagar, a fully grown tree collapsed in front of house number 2/369, blocking the road. In Indira Nagar Sector 8, a tree fell along with electricity poles, obstructing residents and road users. In Sadatganj, a wall collapsed following the rainfall, after which a scooty fell into a pit.
