Riddhi upsets top seed Angel in girls' singles pre-quarters
LUCKNOW, May 7 -- Upsets continued to galore at the ITF Junior J30 Lucknow even on Wednesday as Chukka Lakshya Vardhan stunned second seed Vivaan Bidasaria in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, at the Vijayant Khand here on Wednesday in the boys pre-quarterfinals.
Another Indian Parthiv Nallagundla too, pulled off another big result by defeating fourth seed Tejas Ravi 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Seventh seed Ahan Shetty also fell early, as Shreyanth Mahanthesha advanced after the match was retired at 6-2, 2-1.
Top seed Om Patel, however, stayed on course with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Advit Tiwari. Other winners included Ribhav Saroha, Varad Undre, Shounak Chatterjee and Lethaeesh S Kombila, with the latter benefiting from an eighth-seed retirement after leading 4-6, 6-3, 4-0.
In the girls' pre-quarterfinals, the draw continued to deliver surprises. Riddhi Shinde produced one of the biggest results of the day, toppling top seed Angel Patel in a three-set battle 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Niesha Enja outplayed fifth seed Hiya Kugasia 6-0, 6-1, while Prarthana Khedkar upset seventh seed Tanishca Bhatnagar 6-4, 6-3.
Shazfa Wania SK also impressed with a straight-sets win over eighth seed Jahnavi Tammineedi. Third seed Karthika Padmakumar, meanwhile, moved through confidently with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Saumya Chatterjee.
The Suresh Chandra Tripathi Memorial Lucknow District Badminton Tournament under the auspices of the Swaraj Kalyan Seva Sansthan, will be held from May 14 to May 17, at Vinay Khand Stadium here.
Organized with the objective of providing a platform to badminton talents in Lucknow, the tournament will feature events in the under-11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 categories for both boys' and girls' singles, as well as men's and women's singles and men's doubles competitions. A total cash prize pool of Rs 1 lakh will be distributed among the winners and runners-up.
Organizing secretary, Sanjay Tripathi stated that approximately 500 shuttlers are expected to participate in this tournament, which is recognized by the Lucknow Badminton Association. The tournament will also include men's doubles events in the veterans category (35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+),. Ankit Patel (a national-level badminton player) has been appointed as a member of the organizing committee, while Praveen Raj has been designated as the technical coordinator.
Following the completion of two rounds in the UP State Age-Group Chess Championship, Kanak Dubey (Agra), Sanvi Agarwal (Lucknow), Anupriya Yadav and Priya Yadav (Prayagraj), Samriddhi Tiwari and Vidhi Angelina (Varanasi), and Preksha (Bareilly) were in joint lead the standings with two points each in Sitapur on Wednesday.
Nishtha Tyagi from Meerut holds the second position with 1.5 points. With one point each, Bhavya, Khushika Mittal, Varshika, Vritti Jain, Manvi Jain, Parnika Gupta, Lavanya, Alina Saifi, Sneghdha Jain, Swastika Kumari, Garima, and Angel Gupta are jointly placed in the third position in under-19 category.
On the other hand, in the under-13 Open category, following the completion of seven rounds, Shivay Singh (Prayagraj), Parv Chaudhary (Mathura), and Vardhan Gupta (Kheri) continue to jointly hold the top spot with 6 points each....
