Jaipur, Sept. 19 -- The BJP on Friday sought to project the emergence of its candidates as mayors and chairpersons unopposed in around 25 urban local bodies as a sign of growing support for the party, with state president Madan Rathore attributing it to increasing public confidence in the BJP. "It is the result of the public's trust in the BJP that BJP candidates have become mayors and chairpersons unopposed in around 25 urban local bodies," Rathore said, congratulating Anuradha Singh, who is set to become Bharatpur Municipal Corporation mayor unopposed. Rathore said the developments in Bharatpur and elsewhere reflected the willingness of independent councillors and candidates to associate with the BJP for development in their areas. "The decision of independent councillors to join the BJP is an indication that they want to work together with the BJP government for the development of their areas," Rathore said. He said in some places the opposition did not file nominations, while in others independents withdrew after extending support to the BJP. The BJP's claim comes after the urban local body polls, where it secured 35.18% votes against Congress's 34.24%, a 0.94 percentage-point gap. Nominations for mayor and chairperson posts opened September 16, scrutiny was held September 17 and withdrawals ended September 18.
