PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 24 -- A religious gathering in a Dalit settlement in Prayagraj's Meja area came under scrutiny on Sunday after Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini members reached the venue, alleging attempts to induce Hindus to convert through offers of financial assistance and jobs. The gathering, described by activists as a "healing gathering," was being held in Bhawanipur near a railway overbridge. According to local sources, the groups reached the venue around 11:30 am, following which a commotion ensued and several attendees reportedly left. Police reached the spot and took several men and women to the Meja Road police outpost for questioning. Later, local VHP and Bajrang Dal office bearers submitted a memorandum alleging that members of a particular organisation had been visiting Dalit localities and attempting to induce Hindus to convert. They claimed the issue had previously been brought to the police's attention through complaints, including on the Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS). Activists further alleged that such gatherings were being organised on Sundays in Dalit settlements in villages including Mishrapur and Nevadhia, with economically disadvantaged residents allegedly being offered jobs and financial assistance.
