Razing of mosque in Sambhal politically motivated: SP MP Barq
MEERUT, June 8 -- Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, on Sunday alleged that the demolition of a mosque in Kaserua village in Nakhasa area was Saturday was politically motivated. The said mosque was allegedly built on government graveyard land.
Addressing a press conference at his residence in Sambhal, he claimed that the mosque was around 150-years-old and had long been recognised as a waqf property. According to him, the mosque has been recorded as waqf land since 1984 and is also mentioned in the Uttar Pradesh Gazette of 1995.
The MP argued that disputes concerning waqf properties fall exclusively within the jurisdiction of waqf tribunals, claiming that administrative authorities are not legally empowered to adjudicate such matters.
Barq alleged that the administration acted hastily despite the matter being under legal consideration. He claimed that the tehsildar had earlier dismissed the case, after which an appeal was pending before the DM's court.
The MP claimed that the demolition order was issued during the night and executed the following day. He alleged that the timing was chosen specifically to prevent the affected side from approaching higher courts for relief. "The entire action appears to have been carried out in a pre-planned way," Barq alleged, adding that authorities allegedly took advantage of court closures over the weekend to ensure that no stay order could be obtained before the mosque was demolished. The SP leader said the matter would be pursued in both the high court and the Supreme Court. He said preparations were underway to initiate contempt proceedings and other legal action against the officers involved in the demolition.
Appealing for calm, Barq urged people not to indulge in communal tensions or conflicts in the name of religion. Instead, he called on citizens to defend their rights through constitutional and legal channels.
"If any mosque, madrasa, or religious institution is targeted, people should seek justice through the courts and remain within the framework of the law," he said.
Reposing his faith in the judicial system, the MP said he believed the courts would ultimately deliver justice and ensure accountability if any official was found to have acted in violation of the law....
