Quota issue in govt's knowledge for long: HC on panchayat polls
LUCKNOW, June 5 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court made a significant observation that the issue related to reservation determination in panchayat polls in the state had been in the knowledge of the government for a long time and work should have been done with the required promptness in this direction.
A division bench of Justice Shekhar B Saraf and Justice Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary made the observation on a PIL filed by Ashish Kumar Singh challenging the state government's May 26 order to extend tenure of gram pradhans by six months and appoint them as administrators after their tenure ended on May 25.
The high court passed the order on Wednesday, which was uploaded on the court's website on Thursday. The petitioner, Ashish Kumar Singh, appeared before the court in person and argued his case. Two PILs and a writ have been filed in Lucknow high court on panchayat polls challenging the state government's order to extend tenure of gram pradhans.
The court also directed the state election commission and the OBC commission to submit separate affidavits by July 10, 2026, regarding the current status and progress of panchayat elections and the reservation process. The next hearing in the matter has been set for July 10 when all three petitions will be heard....
