Punjab man held for killing teen, burning body to hide evidence
SBS Nagar, June 7 -- A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly strangling a 16-year-old girl to death, stuffing her body into a suitcase and setting it ablaze in a forest in Punjab's Hoshiarpur, police said, adding that the accused has claimed he was in a relationship with the victim's mother.
According to officials, the charred body of the victim, a resident of Nawanshahr, was recovered from the Khuralgarh Sahib forest area on Friday evening. The accused, identified as Gurwinder Singh of Jadli village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, returned from Dubai two years ago, police said.
SBS Nagar senior superintendent of police Tushar Gupta said, "The girl was missing since May 29. Her mother lodged a missing person complaint on June 2, stating that an unidentified person took her daughter away on the pretext of marriage."
"Gurwinder confessed that he was in a relationship with the victim's mother and was staying permanently at her rented accommodation in Nawanshahr. He often had arguments with the victim for making regular phone calls to her friends," the SSP said, adding that the accused confessed to strangling the girl on May 29 after her mother left for work around 7 am. "He then moved the body-laden suitcase for nearly 30 km into Hoshiarpur before setting the suitcase ablaze," he said. Police said the CCTV footage purportedly showed the accused carrying the suitcase on his motorcycle.
"A case has been registered under Sections 103 (murder) and 238 (destruction of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita," said the SSP....
