Psychological measures of players: A new era of tennis coaching in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW, Sept. 15 -- For generations, young tennis players in Uttar Pradesh have chased excellence through relentless hours on court, grueling physical conditioning, and repetitive tactical drills. While this traditional approach has produced capable athletes, a revolutionary coaching methodology is now reshaping how these players understand, optimize, and elevate their performance.
Leading this transformation is Ratan P Sharma, whose innovative training philosophy seamlessly integrates cutting-edge sports science with time-tested tennis fundamentals at the SDS Tennis Academy, operating from the La Martinere Tennis Facility.
At the heart of Sharma's methodology lies what he calls a "comprehensive mind-body assessment," formally known as a psychophysiological test. This groundbreaking initiative was developed in collaboration with Dr Sanjeev P Sahni, a renowned sports psychology expert whose distinguished career spans decades of dedication to athletic excellence. Dr Sahni personally conducted detailed brain mapping assessments for at least 15 advanced training players, marking an unprecedented milestone in Uttar Pradesh's tennis ecosystem. "In fact, this brain mapping is helping me as well as players in deciding their training methods. Each metric provides crucial intelligence on how a player's mind and body respond under competitive pressure," said Ratan Sharma.
This represents the first instance of such comprehensive psychological and psychophysiological reporting within the state's tennis circuit. Unlike conventional fitness evaluations that measure only physical attributes, this assessment delves deep into the complex interplay between neurological function and athletic performance, revealing insights previously inaccessible to regional coaches and players. "The parameters we analyze include muscle recovery, stress regulation, heat efficiency, thermal calmness, oxygen efficiency, reaction speed, decision speed, timing and anticipation, visual processing, and overall brain state," explains Sharma, who takes pride in having coached at least 10 top Indian players, including Davis Cupper Siddharth Vishwakarma.
In fact, these psychological measurements create a detailed performance fingerprint for every athlete, revealing strengths to leverage and weaknesses requiring attention. The assessment transforms subjective observations into objective data, enabling coaches to move beyond guesswork and intuition toward evidence-based training prescriptions. "We identify whose metrics are average, whose are optimal, and whose fall below standards. This clarity guides our intervention strategy," he explains. This granular understanding enables targeted interventions tailored to individual needs. "Our mission is creating champions here, and I'm confident we'll achieve this soon. Some work happens on court; some requires our collaborative effort," notes Sharma, emphasizing the partnership between coach, player, and support staff.
The program currently nurtures a mixed group of promising young athletes, including five standout girls: Adhya, Anya, Ashi Shamsheri, Anya Chaudhary, and Verika Agarwal. While not all hold national rankings yet, many already compete impressively in talent series and championship events. Most players originate from Uttar Pradesh, with two exceptions-one from Delhi and another from Noida.
Pawan Sagar, a founding member of the SDS Tennis Academy, said his goal is to provide world-class facilities for tennis players in Uttar Pradesh so they can compete at the highest international level. "In my own life, I could never pursue a career in tennis due to unavoidable circumstances, but creating top-class facilities for UP players has always been my dream," he said....
