PRAYAGRAJ, July 24 -- Students, youths, lawyers, intellectuals, and trade union representatives assembled at Chandrashekhar Azad's memorial under the banner of Nagrik Samaj Allahabad. They paid floral tributes to the legendary freedom fighter and condemned the police action against students demonstrating in Delhi against the NEET paper leak. Addressing a public meeting, speakers said students and young people across the country were protesting against paper leaks and unemployment, but the government was responding with repression rather than dialogue. They pledged continued support to the ongoing student movement and demanded the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and home minister Amit Shah. The programme was chaired by senior citizen Anand Malviya. In a separate protest meeting organised near Azad's statue by the Disha Chhatra Sangathan and Naujawan Bharat Sabha, speakers criticised the alleged police lathi-charge on students protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar and in Patna. Nidhi of Disha Chhatra Sangathan said students demanding justice in paper leak cases were being treated like criminals, while Prashant of Naujawan Bharat Sabha described the agitation as an example of a democratic and peaceful movement. Hundreds of students, youths, and local residents attended the gathering. Former Allahabad University Students' Union (AUSU) president Vinod Chand Dubey, KK Rai, Sanjay Tiwari, and Krishnamurti Singh Yadav also issued a joint statement condemning the police action in Delhi and Patna.
