PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 8 -- The indefinite sit-in demanding the renaming of Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital after revolutionary martyr Thakur Roshan Singh entered its third day on Friday. Organisers said that descendants of Kakori martyrs are set to join the protest on Saturday. The demonstration, led by the Mahua Dabar Museum, aims to secure national recognition for the site of Thakur Roshan Singh's martyrdom and ensure the hospital is renamed in his honor. Throughout Friday, the protest site saw an influx of students, youth, social activists and local residents who gathered to pay tributes to the freedom fighter. Avneesh Singh, a representative of the Mahua Dabar Museum, announced that Sharad Singh, the great-grandson of Thakur Roshan Singh, will visit the historic Malaka Jail site on Saturday morning. Following tributes to his ancestor, Sharad Singh is scheduled to address the protesters. Organisers have issued an appeal for citizens, students, and social organizations to join the event at 10 a.m. The ongoing protest gains significance as 2026 marks the centenary of the historic Kakori Train Action. Protesters are demanding that Thakur Roshan Singh receive national recognition commensurate with his contributions before August 9, observed annually as Kakori Train Action Day. Shah Alam Rana, director general of the Mahua Dabar Museum and a descendant of revolutionary martyrs, addressed the gathering, noting that Roshan Singh was executed while fighting British rule at the former Malaka Jail site, where SRN Hospital now stands. Rana argued that the site's historical significance has faded over time and that renaming the hospital is essential. "If governments fail to honour revolutionaries during the Kakori centenary year, ceremonial tributes to the martyrs of India's freedom struggle lose their significance," Rana said. Atul Singh Chauhan, a senior advocate at the Allahabad high court, expressed support for the movement, emphasising that sites linked to India's freedom struggle should have been preserved and honored decades ago.
