PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 13 -- Authorities have intensified their probe into alleged benami properties linked to associates of slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. A joint team of revenue and police officials has been constituted to investigate claims that properties originally owned by Scheduled Caste individuals in Peepalgaon and Damupur villages of Sadar tehsil were transferred to the name of an Atiq associate and are still being traded. According to a letter issued by the sub-divisional magistrate (Sadar), serious allegations have been raised against Rajiv Nagar, a resident of Chak Niratul. The complaint alleges that land belonging to Scheduled Caste residents in Peepalgaon and Damupur were registered in Nagar's name through benami transactions. Officials have further received information that these properties continue to be bought and sold and that proceeds from such transactions are allegedly being routed to members of Atiq Ahmed's family through his associates and relatives. A five-member inquiry team has been formed under the leadership of Naib Tehsildar (South) Piyush Kushwaha. Other members include Airport police station SHO Rajesh Upadhyay, Revenue Inspector Amar Singh, Peepalgaon Lekhpal Manish Kumar, and Damupur Lekhpal Prateek Pandey. The team has been directed to conduct spot inspections and scrutinise all relevant records.
