LUCKNOW, Aug. 25 -- Nearly a week after a Ferris wheel trolley broke loose and injured two young women at a fair in Indira Nagar, Lucknow police have ordered an inquiry against the in-charge of Ismailganj police outpost to examine whether safety norms were properly enforced at the venue. The accident took place at Kuber Ji Lawn in Sector 8, where a Sawan festival was being organised. Two women, Nisha and Ankita, both residents of Vibhuti Khand, were injured after a trolley broke loose and fell. The police move comes after HT reported that permission had been granted for the festival, but checks on the quality and fitness of the amusement rides had allegedly not been carried out by police or the district administration. A senior officer said permission for the festival was granted subject to certain conditions and safety norms. However, the accident raised questions about compliance by the organiser and swing operator, as well as safety arrangements and maintenance of the ride. Police said the inquiry will examine whether the conditions imposed while granting permission were enforced and whether adequate checks of the swing's safety and fitness were conducted before operation. An inquiry has been ordered against Ismailganj outpost in-charge Dinesh Tiwari, with assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Vibhuti Khand Saumya Pandey asked to conduct the probe. It will also examine his role in monitoring the ride and safety arrangements at the venue. If negligence is established, departmental action will follow, police said.
