Probe launched into 34-year-old PhD scholar's death at IIT Roorkee
Dehradun, May 13 -- Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 34-year-old PhD scholar from IIT Roorkee after his body was recovered from the Gangnahar barrage on the campus, with officers probing whether it was suicide or foul play, an officer said.
According to the police, the deceased, a native of Nainital district, had been staying on the IIT Roorkee campus and went missing since Friday. He was a research scholar in the department of electronics and communication engineering.
SP (rural) Shekhar Suyal said the body was recovered from a barrage on the campus, after which inquest proceedings and a postmortem examination were carried out. "We recovered the body, conducted the inquest and postmortem, and handed over the body to the family," Suyal said. He added that police teams had searched the deceased's room and were examining items recovered from there as part of the investigation.
"We are not sure whether it is a case of suicide or murder. We have not received any complaint from the family so far. If they make allegations against anyone, legal action will be taken accordingly," he said.
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said investigators were examining documents and a diary recovered during the search for possible clues. Meanwhile, IIT Roorkee, in a statement, said it was extending full cooperation to the police investigation.
"Information regarding the incident was received from the police authorities, Roorkee, late last night. Subsequently, the student's family members identified him. The institute administration is extending full cooperation and support to the district and police authorities in all related procedures and inquiries," the institute said.
"The institute is in continuous contact with the bereaved family and is providing all possible assistance during this difficult time," it added....
