Pregnant woman climbs tower, seeks marriage with jailed lover
PRAYAGRAJ, May 21 -- A five-month pregnant woman, who had sent her lover to jail just a month ago on charges of rape under the pretext of marriage, climbed a mobile tower in Pratapgarh's Paltan Bazar on Wednesday morning, demanding that she be married to him.
Locals noticed the situation when they saw her four-year-old son standing alone near the tower for a long time. When questioned, the child revealed his mother had climbed the structure, prompting people to gather and begin efforts to bring her down. She eventually agreed to descend only after being assured that her statement would be recorded in court and that arrangements would be made for her marriage.
The woman, around 30, is a resident of Vidasin village under Kunda police station area of Pratapgarh. She separated from her husband, with whom she has a son, and worked as a private sanitation worker at the Maheshganj Community Health Centre. During this period, she lived as a tenant in Ashok Gautam's house, where she developed a relationship with his son, Ankit Gautam. According to her allegations, Ankit established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage but later refused to marry her. By April, she was four months pregnant. On April 21, she filed a police complaint against Ankit and his parents, accusing him of rape on the pretext of marriage, following which police arrested him and sent him to jail on April 24. The woman finally climbed down around 1:30 pm after receiving assurances that her statement would be recorded before the court, that steps would be taken regarding her lover's release according to legal procedure, and that their marriage would subsequently be arranged.
