Prayagraj, June 3 -- Prayagraj district will plant more than 7.1 million saplings as part of the state-wide plantation campaign beginning on World Environment Day on June 5. The administration is also focusing on the protection and survival of the planted saplings. Divisional forest officer (DFO) Arvind Kumar said the district had achieved a sapling survival rate of 98% through continuous monitoring. He said efforts were being made not only to plant trees but also to ensure their growth and protection. A total of 7.13 million saplings will be planted at 35,158 locations identified by 24 government departments. The plantation drive will cover nearly 4,478 hectares. The Forest Department will undertake plantation at 158 sites, while other departments will cover the remaining locations. Officials said more than one crore saplings are available in 39 Forest Department nurseries across the district to support the campaign. The administration is promoting the drive as a long-term public movement rather than a one-day activity. Special attention is being given to increasing green cover along riverbanks and major roads. Around 15,000 saplings will be planted along both sides of the Ganga Expressway in Prayagraj, covering 12 hectares. More than 24,000 saplings will also be planted along the banks of smaller rivers in the district. Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, every Anganwadi centre will be encouraged to plant at least five drumstick saplings. Students in schools and colleges will also be encouraged to plant at least one sapling each. The district will further carry out plantation under the 'One Road, One Species' theme to develop uniform green corridors and improve ecological sustainability in the city....
