Prayagraj to enforce 'no e-rickshaw', pedestrian-only zones
PRAYAGRAJ, May 24 -- 'No e-rickshaw zones' and pedestrian-only areas will be introduced in key parts of Prayagraj from June 1 under a traffic decongestion plan aimed at easing congestion in the city.
The plan will be implemented in busy areas including Chowk, the Clock Tower area, Civil Lines and Lalla Chungi. Authorities have also identified 16 permanent holding areas where buses and trucks will be parked to prevent roadside congestion.
District magistrate Manish Kumar Verma directed strict enforcement against traffic violations, illegal transport operations and encroachments. He also ordered action against schools, hospitals and marriage halls lacking adequate parking facilities, saying such establishments contribute to traffic jams. Notices will be issued and joint inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance.
The plan was prepared jointly by traffic police, the transport department and roadways officials along with union representatives. The administration will implement it with support from tempo-taxi unions, vendors and volunteers.
Verma also ordered strict checks on illegal taxi stands, unregistered vehicles and vehicles without number plates. Enforcement drives will target stunt driving, while challans and licence suspension have been ordered for riding without helmets, not wearing seat belts and using mobile phones while driving.
The municipal corporation has been asked to organise vendors within designated vending zones and ensure intersections remain free from parking and encroachments. Public address systems at major crossings and enhanced police patrolling, especially on the airport route, will also be ensured.
The traffic department has already started a month-long trial ban on e-rickshaw movement on select busy routes from May 21 to assess its impact on easing congestion....
