PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 23 -- The Sangam city is preparing to streamline its public transport system ahead of the 52-day Magh Mela, beginning January 14, 2027, with a focus on reducing traffic congestion, promoting green mobility and improving services for pilgrims. Divisional commissioner Lokesh M has directed officials to introduce uniforms and identity badges for e-rickshaw and e-auto drivers, besides developing a system of cluster-wise numbering and colour coding to regulate their movement and prevent excessive concentration of vehicles on busy roads. Under the proposed dress code, drivers will have to wear khaki bush shirts, coats or full trousers. Their identity badges will carry their name, mobile number, vehicle registration number and address, he said. The regional transport office (RTO) has also been asked to identify drivers and take necessary steps to ensure compliance with the prescribed uniform and badge requirements under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, he added. The administration is also conducting a comprehensive survey of e-rickshaws operating in the city to assess their numbers, routes, movement within and outside municipal limits, and congestion-prone stretches. Based on the survey, the city will be divided into suitable zones to facilitate cluster-wise allocation and route regulation. Dedicated roadside parking facilities for e-rickshaws will also be developed, while a plan is being prepared to remove unsafe vehicles from roads and improve the management of bus stands. Drivers will undergo soft-skills training before the Mela to improve their behaviour and interaction with passengers and visitors arriving from across the country and abroad. Prayagraj divisional regional transport officer (enforcement) SP Singh said more than 41,000 e-rickshaws were operating on roads across the division. Of these, fitness certificates had been issued to 15,176 vehicles, while the fitness process for the remaining vehicles was underway.
