PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 4 -- The city received only light showers at intervals on September 2 and 3, but water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna continued to rise steadily, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying and riverside areas. As the rising river levels affected vulnerable localities, the district administration intensified flood preparedness measures and deployed Water Police teams at key riverside locations to ensure public safety, while urging residents to remain cautious. According to data recorded at 8am on Thursday, water levels at key monitoring stations rose significantly over the previous 24 hours. Although all embankments remain safe and river levels are still below the danger mark, officials are closely monitoring the situation amid the continued rise in water levels. As per readings taken on Thursday morning showed the Yamuna at 82.54 metres at Naini, while the Ganga stood at 82.93 metres at Phaphamau and 82.16 metres at Chhatnag. During the 24-hour period from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, the water level rose by 34 cm at Naini, 7 cm at Phaphamau, and 29 cm at Chhatnag. By 4 pm, the Ganga at 82.96 meters in Phaphamau, 82.20 meter in Chhatnag besides Yamuna in Naini at 82.55 meter had become stable. According to irrigation department executive engineer RK Singh, water levels in both the Ganga and Yamuna, which had been rising continuously for nearly three days, stabilised around 4pm on Thursday. However, the overall rainfall situation in the region, as well as in neighbouring Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, remains a cause for concern. Additional district magistrate (City) Satyam Mishra visited the Rishikul relief camp on Thursday to review arrangements and interact with displaced families. ADM (Finance and Revenue) Vinita Singh, nodal officer for flood relief, said the situation was being continuously monitored. The weather in Prayagraj changed noticeably on Thursday, with overcast skies, strong winds and intermittent light rain bringing relief from the prevailing heat and humidity. The sky remained heavily overcast from morning, while cool winds brought relief and made the weather pleasant across the city.
