Power outage hits Lok Bandhu hosp services; docs use phone torches
LUCKNOW, July 11 -- A power outage at Lok Bandhu Raj Narayan Hospital around 1:30 pm on Friday disrupted emergency services for nearly 30 minutes, forcing doctors to treat patients in the emergency ward using mobile phone torches until electricity was restored around 2 pm.
The outage affected the emergency ward, radiology department, OPD and general wards, disrupting X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound services. Patients on oxygen support, those receiving intravenous fluids and injured patients requiring sutures were treated under mobile phone light.
With neither the generator nor inverter backup functioning immediately, patients and attendants were left anxious. Air-conditioners also stopped working, causing severe discomfort amid the heat and humidity.
The incident came a day after a major electrical failure on Thursday evening, when a fault in the hospital's electrical panel disrupted power supply for nearly seven hours, affecting pathology, wards and other essential services. Blood tests were delayed, while the hospital's backup system reportedly failed due to diesel shortages and technical glitches.
Chief medical superintendent, Dr PC Tiwari said a cable developed a fault after Thursday's rainfall and was repaired by deploying 10 electricians. He added that only power fluctuations occurred on Friday, which were managed by the automatic generators.
The back-to-back disruptions have raised concerns over the reliability of the hospital's emergency power backup system....
