Power infrastructure sweats under heat stress
Lucknow, April 26 -- The state capital is facing mounting pressure on its power infrastructure as rising temperatures expose vulnerabilities in the city's electricity network, disrupting both residential life and industrial activity.
In Indiranagar's Sector 16, around 150 households endured a prolonged overnight outage from Friday 10 PM to Saturday 7:30 AM after a 250 kVA transformer overheated and got damaged. A temporary trolley transformer installed as a backup also broke down within two hours, forcing maintenance teams to work through the night before restoring supply.
In the Sarojininagar industrial area, entrepreneurs reported persistent power disruptions for the past two weeks, including frequent tripping and unannounced outages. According to local industrialist Ritesh Srivastava, sudden shutdowns and reverse phase issues are damaging machinery and halting production, leading to significant financial losses.
Multiple technical faults were reported across Lucknow on Saturday. A breakdown in the Vikas Nagar feeder from the Vipin Khand substation caused an hour-long disruption in the evening, while a 33 kV isolator fault in Vipul Khand delayed restoration by about 30 minutes. At the 132 kV Rahimabad substation, the 33 kV Mall feeder went on the blink for nearly five hours.
Cable faults further compounded the problem in areas including Gopramau, Amaniganj, Malihabad, Jankipuram, and along Kakori Road near the FCI line.
In Yahiyaganj, a fault detected around noon took four hours to fix. Even high-profile zones like Hazratganj saw outages lasting up to 45 minutes. Meanwhile, a cable fire near a transformer at Ashiana Crossing disrupted supply for about an hour before being brought under control. Additional outages were reported in Natkhera and Rajajipuram Sector E.
Chief engineer, central zone, Ravi Agarwal, said, "LESA teams are constantly on the move after any report of power cut. And this year we have managed to solve problems in less time."...
