Power demand soaring again amid complaints of undeclared outages
LUCKNOW, May 19 -- With temperatures rising again after a brief lull, electricity demand has started soaring sharply in Uttar Pradesh, putting pressure on the power distribution system and triggering complaints of undeclared prolonged load-shedding, frequent tripping and low voltage from different parts of the state amid enervating heat conditions.
The state's maximum restricted power demand was recorded to be more than 28,903 MW on Sunday night (at 9.59 PM) indicating a fresh surge in consumption as air-conditioners, coolers and other cooling appliances return to heavier use.
Earlier, the highest demand of the season was recorded at 29,475 MW on April 28 though the unrestricted demand was as high as 30,002 MW the same night.
Currently, the UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) officially resorts to loadshedding for 6 hours in villages and 2.30 hours in nagar panchayats and tehsil-level towns while agriculture consumers are supplied power for only eight hours in a move to restrict the demand.
With demand picking up pace, reports of power interruptions and local tripping incidents have started surfacing from several districts, including the state capital.
Consumers in many areas have complained of frequent outages and fluctuations in supply.
The summer supply disruptions are attributed to distribution bottlenecks caused by high temperature and increased power load that often make it difficult for the fragile supply network to cope up during the peak hours.
Power sector officials, however, maintain that arrangements are in place to meet the rising demand and efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted supply.
The coming days may witness further pressure on the power system if temperatures continue to rise and the peak demand is expected to be between 31000-32000 MW this year.
"Though the demand is high, we are meeting it without resorting to any additional rostering anywhere in the state and supply is being provided to all consumers as per the roster," a UPPCL official claimed....
