Portion of roof above Lucknow Junction waiting room caves in
Lucknow, May 15 -- A major accident was narrowly averted at Lucknow Junction railway station on Thursday evening after a large portion of the roof above the women's waiting room collapsed during demolition work being carried out at a closed canteen. No injuries were reported.
The incident took place around 4 pm when labourers demolishing a wall of the closed IRCTC Rail Aahar canteen allegedly damaged a supporting pillar, leading to the collapse of a nearly 40x40 ft section of the roof attached to the women's waiting hall and toilet area.
According to railway officials, around 90 passengers were present inside the waiting room adjacent to the collapse site, while nearly 110 more were seated in AC waiting halls on the first floor directly above the affected structure. Around 10 workers had reportedly moved away from the spot moments before the roof caved in.
Authorities immediately barricaded the area and evacuated all three waiting halls, including the AC lounges for men and women, citing safety concerns.
People familiar with the matter said the demolition work was being carried out to expand the luggage locker and waiting area by removing the rear wall of the abandoned canteen....
