Poll observer work cut short, IPS officer repatriated to UP
Lucknow, April 23 -- Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ravi Shankar Chhabi has been repatriated to his parent Uttar Pradesh cadre after being withdrawn from election observer duty in West Bengal, setting off discussions within police circles over his early return from central deputation.
Chhabi, a 2007-batch Indian Police Service officer of inspector general (IG) rank, had been posted with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on central deputation since February 6, 2026.
He was recently assigned as an observer by the Election Commission for the ongoing electoral process in West Bengal.
However, in an abrupt move, the Election Commission directed his return to the Central Reserve Police Force headquarters in New Delhi.
Subsequently, the CRPF relieved him and sent him back to his parent cadre in Uttar Pradesh.
Officials have not disclosed the specific reasons behind the decision to cut short his observer assignment.
The development has drawn attention within the police establishment, particularly as such deputations are typically for a fixed tenure and early repatriation is considered unusual.
No formal statement has been issued by the Election Commission (EC) or the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) regarding the circumstances leading to the move....
