Politics over Vande Mataram is to divert attention: Mayawati
LUCKNOW, Aug. 22 -- Terming the ongoing political row over 'Vande Mataram' a ploy to divert attention from pressing public issues, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday said the central and state governments should instead focus on unemployment, student concerns and the widespread loss of life and property caused by floods.
In a post on X, the BSP chief stated that the ongoing debates regarding whether to sing the national song in full, recite only the first two stanzas, or refrain from singing it altogether were unwarranted. In this matter, our party's stance is that the recent law passed in Parliament on singing "Vande Mataram" is not happening for the first time, she said.
"With changes in power at the center and in the states, all parties keep doing this sort of thing based on their political interests/benefits or to divert the public's attention from their own shortcomings. They keep changing each other's enacted laws as well," she said. She emphasised that governments and political parties across the spectrum must prioritise national and public interest issues particularly the challenges faced by unemployed youth, Gen-Z students and Gen-Alpha schoolchildren.
