PRATAPGARH, June 8 -- Police have tightened the noose around those accused of blocking a key road and clashing with police personnel after the death of a power lineman in the Aspur Devsara area of Pratapgarh district recently. Acting on a complaint lodged by a sub-inspector, Patti police have registered a case against six named individuals, including the deceased's father and brother, as well as 70-80 unidentified men and women. The charges relate to a road blockade, alleged stone-pelting, vandalism, and misconduct with police personnel during an incident on June 6, police officials said on Sunday. According to police, a lineman Sachin Chaudhary (28), son of Ram Sundar Chaudhary and a resident of Samogra village, died after coming into contact with an electric current in the Aspur Devsara area on June 4 while changing HT power line. Following the postmortem examination, family members brought the body back to the village on June 5 afternoon and placed it on the Patti-Prithviganj road near the primary school in Samogra, disrupting traffic movement. In his complaint, sub-inspector Pradeep Kumar, posted at the Prithviganj police outpost under Patti police station, alleged that Veer Bahadur Chaudhary, Manoj Chaudhary, Ajit Chaudhary, Mani Ram Chaudhary, Ram Sundar Chaudhary and Jagannath Chaudhary, all residents of Samogra village, along with 70-80 unidentified persons, blocked the road and staged a protest. Police said that despite repeated efforts to persuade the protesters to clear the road, the crowd became aggressive, allegedly abused and threatened police personnel, pelted stones at passing vehicles and damaged property. The protesters also allegedly misbehaved with police officials present at the spot. The blockade was eventually lifted after prolonged efforts by the police, following which the protesters took the body for the last rites. Confirming the move, SHO of Patti police station Anand Pal Singh said that a case has been registered under relevant sections, including provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, on the basis of the sub-inspector's complaint.
