VARANASI, Aug. 15 -- The last rites of a mother and her son, who died by suicide at a guest house in Varanasi on August 10, were performed by police at Harishchandra Ghat on Friday after their relatives refused to claim their bodies, police said. The family, from Panvel in Maharashtra, had arrived in Kashi on August 7. The woman's husband, Vishal Mukherjee, 53, fell ill the next day and was admitted to SSL Hospital, IMS-BHU. He died during treatment. The mother and son performed his last rites at Harishchandra Ghat on August 10 and returned to their guest house, where they later died by suicide. The incident came to light on Monday night. Police recovered two mobile phones from the room and traced the family's address through their Aadhaar cards. With the help of local police, they contacted neighbours in Panvel, who said they were unaware of the family's relatives. Assistant commissioner of police, Dashashwamedh, Atul Anjan Tripathi said police managed to contact Vishal's sister, Pritha Pandey, and her husband, Bhupendra Pandey, residents of Prayagraj, on Thursday. Pandey told police that she had not been in contact with her brother for nearly 12 years. She said Vishal, a native of Colonelganj in Prayagraj, had moved to Maharashtra around 15 years ago to work at a cement factory and had settled there. According to police, Vishal had taken loans and borrowed money from his sister's friends and his son's friends. Pandey told police that their father died in 2018 and their mother in 2022. After waiting 72 hours for relatives to come forward, police conducted the post-mortems on Friday and performed the last rites of the mother and son at Harishchandra Ghat, the ACP said....
