MEERUT, June 21 -- A history-sheeter wanted in a cow slaughter case was arrested after being injured in a late-night police encounter in Saharanpur district on Friday. The accused, identified as Ahsan, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg when police returned fire after he allegedly opened fire on a police team conducting a vehicle-checking operation in the Deoband area. According to police, a team led by sub-inspectors Ravindra Singh and Shivam Chaudhary was conducting a checking drive near the Bibipur culvert when two men riding a motorcycle approached the spot. When signalled to stop, the duo allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire at the police personnel while escaping. The police team immediately pursued the suspects. During the ensuing exchange of fire, one of the accused sustained a bullet injury to his right leg. He was subsequently arrested at the scene, while his accomplice managed to flee. Circle officer Abhitesh Singh identified the arrested accused as Ahsan, a resident of Bhanhera Khas village. He was admitted to a government hospital for treatment.
