PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 6 -- Following the Mumbai Police's discovery of an illegal MD (mephedrone) manufacturing unit operating from a tin shed on a farm in the Manda area, police commissioner (ADG) Piyush Mordia has disbanded the Special Operations Group (SOG) teams functioning across all four commissionerate zones. Commissioner Mordia relieved all 44 members of the SOG contingent, including Central Zone SOG in-charge Savin Tomar, City Zone in-charge Neeraj Kumar, Ganganagar Zone in-charge Sukhchain Tiwari and Yamunanagar Zone in-charge Naveen Kumar Singh, of their current responsibilities. All personnel have been directed to report to their respective deputy commissioners of police (DCPs). Sources said fresh SOG teams for all four zones are likely to be constituted soon, with emphasis on efficiency, technical expertise and intelligence gathering. The decision comes shortly after Mumbai Police busted an illegal drug manufacturing unit in Kosda Kala village, seizing 52.932 kg of MD, nearly 260 litres of chemicals and laboratory equipment from a tin shed. The wider network was linked to a total recovery of 69.759 kg of MD and Rs.18.70 lakh cash, with the seized drugs, chemicals and equipment estimated at Rs.139 crore. Investigations found the network had links to Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states, with authorities also probing possible international connections. Stricter monitoring of organised crime, narcotics trafficking and illegal trade is expected in the region. The dismantling of the existing SOG units is part of a broader effort to strengthen policing and improve intelligence-based operations. Officials will select experienced and technically proficient personnel for the new teams. Notably, the illegal MD manufacturing unit is believed to have operated in the Manda area for nearly seven months, with the network allegedly involving traffickers from Uttar Pradesh and several other states.
