Police catch 7 women selling ganja after drones identify them
Kanpur, April 17 -- The Special Operations Group deployed drones and a team of around 70 personnel to raid roadside kiosks in Kanpur's Sachendi area late on Wednesday night, arresting seven women and seizing 3.30 kg of cannabis and Rs 92,000.
The operation targeted a network of small tea and paan stalls in the congested lanes near the Sachendi police station. Police said they had been receiving repeated tip-offs about drug sales in the area. Drones were first used to monitor movement in the narrow bylanes, after which ground teams moved in to search the kiosks. Sumit Sudhakar Ramteke, ADCP, SOG, said the accused were procuring cannabis in bulk from suppliers in Bidhnoo and Madhya Pradesh, repackaging it into three-gram sachets and selling each for Rs 50. Between 4,000 and 4,500 sachets were allegedly sold daily during two fixed windows, 9 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 7 pm, generating over Rs 4 lakh a day. The tea, paan and tobacco stalls allegedly served as a front.
Those arrested have been identified as Karishma Gihar, Anita, Deepa, Savitri, Sangita, and two others. All seven are to be produced before a court on Thursday. The men suspected of supplying cannabis to the network are yet to be identified, police said....
