Haridwar, June 23 -- A 22-year-old iron welder was arrested on Monday with 18.50 grams of heroin worth a sum of approximately Rs.4.62 lakh in the Kaliyar area of rural Haridwar, police officers familiar with the matter said.
Inspector in-charge of Kaliyar police station, Divyesh Upadhyay said the accused was identified as Ankush Chand, a resident of Pirapura in Manglaur.
He was apprehended during a routine checking drive on Abdal Sahab Road in Imlikheda, said the inspector. He said the suspect's conduct aroused suspicion, which led to the recovery of the contraband material.
"A total of 18.50 grams of smack, estimated to be worth around Rs.4.62 lakh, was recovered from Ankush. During questioning, he admitted that he was involved in drug peddling to finance his own addiction," said Upadhyay
A case was registered against the accused under Sections 8 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and further legal proceedings are underway, police said.
Police added that efforts are being made to ascertain the source of the recovered narcotics and identify others involved in the supply chain....
