Pocso survivor climbs 50-ft tower, demands release of accused
KANPUR, May 13 -- A minor survivor in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act climbed a 50-ft communication tower inside the Kanpur police commissioner's office campus on Tuesday and threatened to jump unless the accused, currently in judicial custody, was released.
The incident unfolded around 12.30 pm, when the girl scaled the wireless communication tower and began demanding the release of the man, whom she referred to as her husband.
Police said she had recently met him during a court-related proceeding before climbing the structure.
Senior officers, including additional police commissioner Vipin Tada and DCP (Headquarters) Dinesh Chandra Tripathi, staff officer to commissioner Amarnath rushed to the spot along with personnel from multiple police stations as crowds gathered on the premises.
Negotiations continued for nearly two hours. Staff Officer Amarnath and others urged her to come down, assuring that her concerns would be heard before a magistrate. "Come down, we will talk and take you to the judge," an officer told her, according to those present.
She refused, repeatedly stating she would not descend until the accused was released, and moved higher on the tower whenever rescue teams attempted to approach.
The situation eased only after the accused was brought from court and shown to her around 1.30 pm.
Police said she then climbed down on her own and broke down after seeing him. She was subsequently sent for counselling at the police lines, while the accused was taken back into custody.
According to police, the case began in October 2025 when this girl went missing from the Sachendi area after which her mother lodged a complaint. She was recovered on October 26, and a man from Bithoor was arrested.
Following medical examination, the case was converted into a POCSO matter and abduction charges were added. Investigators said a charge sheet was filed in November 2025.
Police added that the girl and the accused had allegedly undergone a marriage ceremony at an Arya Samaj temple during the period they were together, which was later cited in the family's complaint.
A relative at the scene said the girl had been brought for a scheduled court hearing when she suddenly climbed the tower after meeting the accused, alleging distrust in the police process and resisting repeated attempts to bring her down.
Her mother also reached the site and told officials that the accused had taken her daughter away in October and that legal proceedings had been ongoing since her recovery.
She said the family was facing severe financial hardship and had no support, adding that they were seeking justice....
