PM urges pilgrims to follow 5 resolutions at Char Dham
Dehradun, April 23 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged pilgrims visiting Uttarakhand for the Char Dham Yatra to adopt five resolutions aimed at promoting cleanliness, environmental protection, social harmony and support for local livelihoods.
Prime Minister Modi also appealed to pilgrims to observe a "digital fast" during the pilgrimage and take time to experience the natural beauty of the Himalayas, adding that this would offer a deeper sense of spiritual satisfaction. In his message on the opening of the portals of Kedarnath Dham on X, the Prime Minister said the pilgrimage had begun on the sacred soil of Uttarakhand, popularly known as 'Devbhumi' (Land of the Gods). He described the journey to the four Himalayan shrines-Kedarnath Dham, Badrinath Dham, Gangotri Dham and Yamunotri Dham-as a reflection of India's timeless cultural and spiritual consciousness. The Prime Minister said that the revered philosophers such as Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya had also undertaken pilgrimages to the Himalayan shrines, giving new direction to Indian spiritual traditions.
Highlighting the state's importance in the national development vision, Modi said that a "developed Uttarakhand" is essential for building a developed India. He added that in recent years, large-scale infrastructure and tourism development had made the Char Dham Yatra more accessible, safer and spiritually enriching for pilgrims.
The PM urged pilgrims to maintain cleanliness in and around the Dhams and along the pilgrimage routes.
Pilgrims should ensure that no waste is left behind and should actively contribute to keeping the rivers and surrounding areas clean.
Pilgrims were asked to remain mindful of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and respect the natural environment. The Prime Minister encouraged visitors to contribute to environmental conservation through initiatives such as planting a tree under the campaign "One Tree in the Name of Mother," and by ensuring that their travel does not harm forests, wildlife or water sources.
Emphasising the historic role of pilgrimages in fostering public service and social harmony, Modi said that pilgrims should resolve to perform at least one act of service each day during their journey. This could include assisting fellow travellers, supporting elderly pilgrims or participating in voluntary activities along the route. He also encouraged pilgrims to interact with people from different regions and cultures to strengthen the spirit of "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat."
The Prime Minister appealed to pilgrims to support the livelihoods of local communities by purchasing regional products and handicrafts during their journey. He suggested that pilgrims should aim to spend at least five percent of their travel budget on local goods, thereby helping strengthen the local economy and promote traditional crafts of Uttarakhand.
Pilgrims were urged to strictly follow the rules of the Char Dham Yatra and adhere to traffic and safety guidelines issued by the authorities. Modi emphasised that responsible behaviour by pilgrims would help ensure a smooth, safe and well-organised pilgrimage for everyone, while also reducing inconvenience to the many personnel involved in managing the yatra....
