Lucknow, July 16 -- MLA Dr Rajeshwar Singh on Wednesday flagged off the World Plastic Surgery Day Awareness Walkathon organised by the Department of Plastic Surgery & Burns, SGPGIMS from the Lucknow Golf Club. He stressed the need for greater public awareness about burn prevention, timely first aid and the role of reconstructive surgery in restoring lives. Addressing doctors, resident doctors, golfers and citizens, Dr Singh said plastic surgery is not limited to cosmetic procedures but plays a critical role in treating burn and acid-attack survivors, accident victims, children with congenital deformities and cancer patients. Sharing an incident from his tenure as a police officer in Lucknow, he recalled an acid-attack case in which police ensured justice by arresting the accused, while plastic surgeons helped the survivor regain her confidence and rebuild her life. "Plastic surgeons do not merely close wounds; they restore dignity, identity and hope," he said. Calling burns a major public health concern, Dr Singh urged people to cool burn injuries under running water for 20 minutes, avoid applying home remedies such as toothpaste or butter, and seek immediate medical treatment. He also noted that World Plastic Surgery Day originated in India before becoming a global awareness campaign in 2021. He congratulated SGPGIMS Plastic Surgery Department head Dr Rajeev Agarwal and his team for organising the event and appealed to participants to spread the message: 'Cool the Burn, Save a Life.'...
