LUCKNOW, Sept. 2 -- People need to unite to protect the Constitution and democracy, said Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders on Tuesday at the 'Lok Hunkar' programme. "We need to unite to safeguard the Constitution and democracy in the country as an atmosphere of fear has been created across Uttar Pradesh. Death of a young man at the Dataganj police station in Badaun-and the numerous deaths occurring in police custody-demonstrate that there is virtually no government left in the state," said Ajai Rai, UP Congress president, while addressing the event in Lucknow. He mentioned that he met the family members, and witnessed their anguish. UP Congress in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam said, "BJP does not respect the Constitution or the law. The manner in which the venue where Mallikarjun Kharge held a meeting (in Uttarakhand) was 'purified' represents the height of untouchability and casteism. When Mallikarjun Kharge raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda stated that they condemned such acts, would identify those responsible, and ensure punishment, yet, no case has been registered." Rai said Congress has always stood with common people against oppression and anti-people policies, "Every Congress worker stands like a wall and will fight the people's battle until their last breath," said Rai. Apart from the event, senior Congress leaders also staged a sit-in at the GPO to protest FIR lodged against the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. MP Barabanki Tanuj Poonia who led the protest said they would not back out from the fight for the rights of Dalits. The protestors were later taken to the Eco Garden by the cops....
