Over 8.79 lakh new enrolments in 20 days under phase 1
LUCKNOW, April 21 -- Enrolment in government-run primary, and upper primary schools in the state increased significantly under the School Chalo Abhiyan. Over 8.79 lakh new enrolments were recorded in just 20 days during the first phase of the campaign.
The second phase of the campaign will be organised in July. The total enrolment in 2025-26 was 15.84 lakh children and in 2024-25 it was 13.22 lakh children, according to a government spokesperson.
The basic education department has identified out-of-school children and integrated them into the mainstream. More than 1.32 lakh schools have been covered under Operation Kayakalp for infrastructural development, according to a press release.
While only 36 percent of schools had modern facilities in 2017-18, that figure has now risen to 96.30 percent.
Additionally, 150 Chief Minister Model Composite Schools are being established across 75 districts. Education has been strengthened holistically through technology, training, and nutrition initiatives, clearly reflecting the government's priority towards education and its structured outcomes.
The School Chalo Abhiyan and survey-based strategies have played a decisive role in bringing children back to school, officials said.
In 2024-25, about 7.73 lakh out-of-school children were identified. Of these, 2.69 lakh were directly admitted to Class 1, while 5.04 lakh were mainstreamed through special training. New residential schools are being established in blocks lacking Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. Efforts are also underway to convert all primary schools into smart schools, the press release stated.
