LUCKNOW, Sept. 23 -- In the matter of creation of 9,149 new courts in Uttar Pradesh, the state government on Monday informed the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court that the order for the creation of 900 new courts in the first phase, following cabinet approval, was issued on September 17. "In view of above situation, the petition is adjourned sine die, to be revived as and when the occasion arises in relation to the implementation of the order dated September 17, 2026, and/or creation of further posts in terms of the direction of Hon'ble Supreme Court," the court ordered. A division bench of chief justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Jaspreet Singh passed the order on September 21 on a suo motu PIL seeking directives to strengthen the state's judicial infrastructure by creating 9,149 new courts. The issue of early establishment of these new courts was raised in the PIL. At the last hearing, the chief secretary and principal secretary, law, appeared before the court on July 23, 2026. They informed the bench that the proposal had received the chief minister's in-principle approval. Seeking two months' time to complete the remaining formalities and issue a government order, the chief secretary had said that the proposal would now be placed before the council of ministers. During the hearing on July 23, the bench had noted that the high-level committee of the state government had given in-principle approval for setting up 900 courts in the first phase in October 2024.
