Opposition stir hits Day 1 of the budget session
Gairsain (Chamoli), March 10 -- The budget session of the Uttarakhand assembly in Gairsain began on a stormy note, with the governor's address marked by sloganeering and a walkout by Congress MLAs.
When Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) began his speech at 11 am, the Congress MLAs started raising slogans, entered the well of the House, and eventually staged a walkout. Ahead of the session, the Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yashpal Arya staged a protest at the entrance of the assembly building. They alleged that the government wants to truncate the budget session, preventing their MLAs from raising pressing issues and those from their constituencies.
The opposition party demanded that the Budget session be extended. Arya said, "The House is governed by rules, regulations, and traditions. For the first time, we are seeing the Budget being tabled on the same day as the Governor's address. This clearly indicates that the government does not want the Budget session to run for long."...
