Dehradun, July 27 -- Calls for the resignation of Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Bhatt emerged on Sunday after his controversial remarks triggered criticism. The Opposition Congress also accused Bhatt of insulting the students. Reacting to the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan amid mounting student protests, Bhatt on Saturday said the decision was taken in the interest of students. He, however, added, "Jinko saalon ko lena-dena nahi tha, unko bhi ek achha message diya hai" (It has also sent a strong message to those who had nothing to do with the issue). The remark drew criticism as Bhatt used the Hindi word "saalon", an expression widely regarded as an abusive or derogatory way of addressing someone. Bhatt, however, later issued a clarification, claiming that the Opposition had distorted his remarks for political gains. "I said jinko saaro ko (to everyone/everyone concerned)," he said. Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal alleged that Bhatt used abusive language for students, saying it reflected his "disrespect" towards them. "It shows that Bhatt is hurt by the resignation of Pradhan. Earlier, minister Prem Chand Aggarwal had to resign for using abusive language. This reflects Bhatt's attitude towards students. Before the matter escalates further, he should apologise. If he doesn't, I urge students to stage a dharna outside his residence," Godiyal said. Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) leader Ashish Negi said some have not been able to digest Pradhan's resignation. "Bhatt used abusive language against students. He should withdraw his remarks. This is not the first time he has made such a mistake. Earlier, a BJP minister had to resign after using abusive language against the Pahari community. I appeal to students to demand Bhatt's resignation because he is both a Rajya Sabha member and the BJP's Uttarakhand state president," he said. Dehradun unit of the UKD burnt an effigy of Bhatt at Dron Chowk in Dehradun, and sought his resignation. Uttarakhand Berozgar Sangh asked Bhatt to apologise, or statewide protests would be launched against him. Ram Kandwal, president of the Uttarakhand Berozgar Sangh, alleged that Bhatt had used abusive language against students across the country. "These are students who have been protesting on the streets and studying in libraries to prepare for competitive examinations. His remarks reflect his mindset and level of understanding; an educated person would not have made such a statement. Earlier too, he made offensive remarks against government job aspirants protesting over the paper leak issue. I urge him to apologise. If he fails to do so, protests against him will begin across the state," Kandwal said....
