PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 14 -- A staff nurse from Bhadwan village in Kaushambi's Kokhraj area was allegedly "digitally arrested" and defrauded of Rs.2.30 lakh by cyber fraudsters who initially lured her with promises of an expensive gift before threatening her with legal action and imprisonment. Police registered a case on Saturday night after the victim approached authorities nearly a month after the incident, launching a full investigation. The victim, Reena, a staff nurse with an ambulance service, received multiple calls from unknown numbers on August 7. One caller, identifying himself as Akash and claiming to hold a lucrative job abroad, gained her trust, obtained her address and promised to send her an expensive gift. The following day, another scammer posing as a delivery agent claimed the parcel had arrived at Mumbai airport and demanded Rs.15,000 for delivery. The fraudsters subsequently coerced her into transferring Rs.15,000, Rs.38,000, and Rs.53,000 in separate transactions, eventually siphoning off Rs.2.30 lakh. They later demanded an additional Rs.2 lakh, threatening to implicate her in a criminal case and send her to jail if she failed to pay. Frightened, Reena initially kept quiet before confiding in her family, approaching the cyber police, and formally lodging a complaint at Kokhraj police station on Saturday. Kokhraj SHO Santosh Sharma confirmed that a case has been registered based on the nurse's complaint and an investigation is underway.
