Nomination for RS polls ends, voting on Mar 16
New Delhi, March 6 -- Nominations for 37 Rajya Sabha seats going to the polls across 10 states later this month were filed on Thursday with contests likely in Odisha and Bihar.
In Maharashtra, where seven seats are falling vacant, the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded four candidates - including Union minister Ramdas Athawale, senior leader Vinod Tawde, Maya Ivnate and Ramrao Wadkute. its ally Shiv Sena fielded Jyoti Waghmare and Nationalist Congress Party nominated Parth Pawar. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi picked senior NCP (SP) patriarch Sharad Pawar as its joint nominee.
With no additional nominees being fielded by the ruling Mahayuti, all seven people are likely to be elected unopposed.
In Bihar, where five seats are up for grabs, the JD(U) fielded chief minister Nitish Kumar and Union minister Ram Nath Thakur. The BJP nominated party chief Nitin Nabin and state general secretary Shivesh Kumar. The NDA also extended support to Rashtriya Lok Manch leader Upendra Kushwaha. The opposition RJD fielded businessman-turned-politician Amarendra Dhari Singh for the fifth seat.
The NDA has enough votes to win four seats outright. For the fifth seat, it needs three Opposition votes.
In Odisha, the BJP fielded state unit chief Manmohan Samal and sitting MP Sujeet Kumar. The Opposition Biju Janata Dal picked Santrupt Mishra. For the fourth seat, the ruling party backed former minister Dilip Ray while the BJD and Congress are set to support an independent candidate urologist Datteswar Hota.
For the fourth seat, the BJP needs eight additional votes from the Opposition, which can win the seat if it bands together.
In West Bengal, where five seats are going to the polls, the TMC fielded lawyer Menaka Guruswamy, actor Koel Mallick, singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo and former state police chief Rajiv Kumar. The BJP has fielded former state unit chief Rahul Sinha. All five are set to be elected unopposed.
In Tamil Nadu, where six seats are falling vacant, the DMK has nominated Tiruchi Siva and Professor J Constantine Ravindran, while its allies Congress and DMDK have named Christopher Tilak and LK Sudeesh, respectively. The AIADMK has nominated M Thambidurai, and its ally the PMK has fielded Anbumani Ramadoss. All are set to be elected unopposed.
In Assam, where three seats are going to the polls, the BJP has nominated Terash Gowalla, and Jogen Mohan, while its ally United People's Party Liberal has fielded Pramod Boro.
In Chhattisgarh, where two seats are going to polls, the ruling BJP has nominated Laxmi Verma while the Congress has fielded Phulo Devi Netam. Both are set to be elected unopposed.
In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress has nominated Anurag Sharma for the lone vacant seat.
In Telangana, the ruling Congress has nominated Abhishek Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy for the two seats and both are set to get elected unopposed, as the BRS stayed away from the contest.
In Haryana where two seat are falling vacant, the BJP and the Congress have fielded one candidate each -former Karnal MP, Sanjay Bhatia and a former government employee, Karamvir Boudh respectively. A BJP backed Independent has also filed nomination, making it a closely watched contest....
