Newborn's fatal fall at LBRN: Two nurses dismissed, doc served notice
LUCKNOW, July 10 -- A probe into the death of a newborn after an alleged fall during delivery at Lok Bandhu Raj Narayan (LBRN) Hospital in Ashiana area on July 5 has led to the dismissal of two contractual staff nurses and a show-cause notice to a senior gynaecologist, while exposing gaps in the hospital's night-time obstetric care.
The two-page inquiry report was submitted to director general, family welfare, Dr Pawan Kumar Arun, three days after the incident. Notably, soon after the incident, deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak directed officials to complete the probe within 24 hours.
Dr Arun said disciplinary action had been initiated against the two contractual nurses, while the on-call (permanent) gynaecologist was served a show-cause notice and asked to explain her alleged absence and other aspects of the case. Meanwhile, hospital director Dr Rajesh Kumar said the hospital could only recommend action and the final decision rested with higher authorities.
The infant, born to Kirti Pal of Sita Vihar Colony, allegedly slipped from the hands of hospital staff and fell onto the floor during delivery. Her husband, Shubham, accused the hospital staff of negligence. A postmortem examination confirmed that the newborn died of a traumatic head injury.
The inquiry has also raised questions over the functioning of the hospital's obstetrics and gynaecology unit. The 300-bed hospital has a 50-bed gynaecology department with six gynaecologists, seven emergency medical officers and around 20 nursing and operation theatre staff. Despite the available strength, no specialist is posted at the hospital during the night. All gynaecologists remain on on-call duty, with deliveries often managed by nursing staff until a doctor arrives.
The findings have prompted questions over why no accountability has been fixed on permanent staff, including whether a regular staff nurse was posted in the labour room and why the on-call doctor allegedly failed to reach despite being informed....
