Mussoorie, July 22 -- Traffic on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road near Kolhukhet was partially restored on Tuesday morning, a day after a landslide caused a portion of the road overlooking the Doon Valley to cave. The road was completely closed to traffic at around 4 pm on Monday after heavy rain triggered a landslide, with debris falling onto the carriageway and cracks developing on a portion of the road. Rahul Anand, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Mussoorie, said the damaged stretch had been restored for light vehicles, which were being allowed to pass cautiously. "The stretch of road damaged by heavy rains on Monday evening has been restored and is open for light vehicles, which can pass with caution today," Anand said. Public Works Department (PWD) teams have been working since Monday night to repair the damaged section. Intermittent rain, however, has posed a challenge to the restoration work. Anand said the repair work was being personally monitored to ensure that the road could be made fully operational for all vehicles at the earliest. Although traffic movement resumed for light vehicles, officials said long queues formed on both sides of the affected stretch as vehicles were being allowed to cross in turns. Meanwhile, monsoon-triggered debris and falling stones disrupted traffic on the Yamunotri National Highway 94 (New-134), particularly on the stretch connecting Barkot with Jankichatti in Uttarkashi district. Landslips at Paligadh, Ranachatti and Syanachatti brought traffic to a halt. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the NH Barkot division deployed heavy earthmoving machinery, including a JCB, Poclain, excavator and rock breaker, to clear the debris early on Tuesday. District Disaster Management Control Centre, Uttarkashi officials, said the highway was reopened to traffic by noon after the debris was cleared. Heavy rainfall and landslides had temporarily disrupted several roads across Uttarkashi district, including a national highway stretch, four Main District Roads (MDRs), one district road and five rural roads. Clearance operations were underway on the affected routes. Officials said essential public services, including electricity and drinking water supplies, remained unaffected and continued to function normally across all blocks. In Chamoli district, the road near Bhanerpani, which had been blocked by a landslide triggered by overnight rain, was reopened to traffic at around 6.20 am on Tuesday, according to district disaster management The Kedarnath pilgrimage, which was suspended on Monday amid adverse weather conditions, also resumed on Tuesday, with district authorities issuing guidelines for pilgrims undertaking the journey....
