Meerut, Aug. 5 -- Muzaffarnagar has emerged as a key transit point for lakhs of Shiva devotees returning from Haridwar with the water of the holy Ganga. Alongside the surge in pilgrims, convoys of vehicles with music paraphernalia blasting music have begun entering Uttar Pradesh, prompting authorities to intensify inspections at the state's border to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Police have made it mandatory for every such vehicle to undergo inspection before being allowed to proceed into Uttar Pradesh. The Purkazi border on the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh boundary has become the primary checkpoint, where officials are measuring height, width and other specifications of vehicle. Under the Uttar Pradesh government's guidelines, the maximum permissible height of a music-playing vehicle is 10 feet, while the width cannot exceed 12 feet. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma said strict action is being taken against those violating the guidelines. On Sunday night, police imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a vehicle operated by Kashyap DJ after it was found to exceed the prescribed dimensions. The vehicle was allowed to resume its journey only after being modified to meet the required standards. Several Shiva devotees and DJ operators, however, said they were facing difficulties because of differences in inspection procedures in Uttarakhand and UP. They claimed that although they had designed their vehicles in accordance with Uttar Pradesh's guidelines, varying enforcement standards at the two states' checkpoints had led to delays. Many such vehicles have reportedly remained stranded at the Purkazi border for several hours, slowing the movement of the pilgrimage and causing inconvenience to devotees. Verma said the inspections are being conducted jointly by the Haridwar Police and the Muzaffarnagar Police in accordance with the state government's directions. He said only vehicles complying with the prescribed height, width and other safety requirements are being permitted to enter Uttar Pradesh. He stressed that the enforcement drive was not intended to harass devotees but to ensure the safety of the lakhs of pilgrims participating in the Kanwar Yatra and to facilitate the smooth conduct of one of north India's largest annual religious processions....
