Murder case filed against 6 policemen over jeweller's death during raid
Meerut, Aug. 21 -- A murder case has been registered against six policemen in Shahjahanpur following the death of a 65-year-old bullion trader whose body was found at a neighbouring under-construction building hours after police raided his house in connection with a theft case, officials said on Thursday.
The FIR was registered at Nigohi police station on Wednesday evening on a complaint filed by the deceased's wife, Shanti Devi. Four of the policemen named in the FIR are posted at Malihabad police station in Lucknow, while two are personnel from the local Nigohi police station, additional superintendent of police (city) Devendra Kumar said. The deceased, identified as Umesh Gupta, was allegedly taken to the roof of his house by the police during the raid and thrown from there, his wife alleged in her complaint.
Shanti Devi also accused the policemen of repeatedly extorting money from her husband and said they developed hostility towards him after she complained about their conduct to senior police officials. She further alleged that the policemen killed Gupta and took away jewellery kept in the house.
According to ASP Devendra Kumar, a theft case had been registered at Malihabad police station in Lucknow in 2025, in which Gupta, a resident of Shahjahanpur, was named as an accused. A team of Malihabad police arrived in Nigohi with a court warrant to conduct a raid at Gupta's residence. Local police personnel accompanied the team to assist in the operation, which was carried out at around 3am on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, Kumar said.
The Malihabad police team entered Gupta's house but could not find him there. Around four hours later, at approximately 7 am, his body was found at a neighbouring building that was under construction, the ASP said. The circumstances in which Gupta reached the neighbouring building and died are now under investigation.
Malihabad station house officer Surendra Bhati said the police investigation into a theft reported in his station's jurisdiction in 2025 had led investigators to Gupta.
According to Bhati, some of those arrested in the theft case allegedly told police that they had sold 30 kg of silver to Gupta in Shahjahanpur.
Based on the investigation, police obtained a court warrant against Gupta on May 8, Bhati said. The warrant was subsequently taken to Shahjahanpur when the Malihabad police team went to his residence on Wednesday.
Police said Gupta's body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The police are also examining the circumstances of the early-morning raid, the presence and role of the local police personnel, and how Gupta's body came to be found at the neighbouring under-construction building....
