PRAYAGRAJ, April 12 -- An arrested murder accused opened fire on a police team during a weapon recovery operation in the Raivi Rajanipur area under Antu police station limits of Pratapgarh, and was injured in retaliatory firing. According to police, two suspects arrested in connection with the April 4 murder of Pankaj Shukla were taken for the recovery of a country-made pistol used in the crime. Pankaj Shukla, a resident of Raivi Rajanipur village, was shot dead near his village while riding a motorcycle with the gram pradhan. Following the incident, his brother lodged a case naming four accused. On Friday evening, the Lucknow STF arrested Vivek Pandey alias Rishik, a resident of Dasiyapur, and Vipin Tiwari of Raivi Rajanipur near a police checkpoint on the Kithawar-Amethi road, and later handed them over to Antu police. During interrogation by Station Officer Abhishek Singh Sirohi, the accused disclosed that the weapon used in the murder was hidden near the Baijalpur bridge. Late that night, police took both suspects to the Baijalpur culvert to recover the pistol. During the operation, Vishwas Pandey allegedly pushed the police personnel and suddenly opened fire.
