MEERUT, May 31 -- A man wanted in connection with the murder of a local businessman was arrested after a police encounter in Pilibhit district on Saturday morning. The accused was injured in the exchange of fire and later taken into custody. According to additional superintendent of Police Vikram Dahiya, a police patrol team was carrying out routine checks near the Eetgaon canal bridge on Banda Road at around 5 am when officers spotted a suspicious motorcyclist. Police signalled the rider to stop, but he allegedly opened fire at the team. During the incident, head constable sunil kumar suffered a bullet graze injury to his right arm. Police retaliated in self-defence to stop the suspect. The accused, identified as Lucky Maurya ,21, a resident of Tilhar JE locality in Shahjahanpur district, was shot in the right leg and arrested at the scene. A country-made pistol was recovered from his possession. Police also seized an empty cartridge lodged in the weapon, a live cartridge and a motorcycle without a registration number plate. Police said Lucky Maurya was wanted in the murder of businessman Pappu Gupta, who was shot during a violent incident at Bamrauli Tiraaha in Bilsanda on May 28. According to investigators, a group of men had assaulted Pankaj Katiyar at his bicycle repair shop. Gupta, who owned a nearby clothing store, intervened to stop the attack. During the commotion, he caught hold of one of the fleeing suspects. Police said one of the attackers then allegedly fired a shot from a country-made firearm, critically injuring Gupta. He was taken to the hospital but later died during treatment. Following a complaint by Pankaj Katiyar, an FIR was registered at Bilsanda police station. Senior police officers formed five teams to investigate the case and trace those involved. Police said raids and search operations are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects.
