Mughal-era silver coins unearthed in Kushinagar
GORAKHPUR, June 11 -- A cache of 330 ancient silver coins, believed to date back to the Mughal era, was unearthed from an agricultural field in Kushinagar district, officials said on Wednesday.
The coins were found inside a buried brass vessel during excavation work in Gopalpur Ojhawalia village under Taryasujan police station limits.
The pot broke open, scattering hundreds of coins and attracting local residents.
Police said some coins were allegedly taken away before officials reached the spot.
So far, 330 coins have been recovered and handed over to the revenue department.
Preliminary examination suggests the coins are several centuries old and bear Persian inscriptions.
Archaeological experts will examine the cache to determine its exact age, origin and historical significance.
Officials said the coins have been secured and the site documented, while efforts are underway to recover any remaining coins.
Further investigation is in progress....
