Mohaddipur flyover crash toll rises to two
Gorakhpur, March 7 -- The death toll in the drunk driving incident at Mohaddipur flyover rose to two on Friday after another victim, Umesh Sharma (48), succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS Gorakhpur.
Police said Sharma was the brother of Dr Kamlesh Sharma, an eye specialist and member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Gorakhpur.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when a speeding Fortuner SUV, allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol, rammed into several vehicles on the Mohaddipur overbridge.
Earlier, Akash Pandey (22), a third-year MBBS student of Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, had died after being hit by the vehicle. The SUV driver, Golden Sahni (30), a property dealer, was arrested and sent to jail on Thursday.
Shahpur police station SHO Ashwani Pandey said Umesh Sharma was returning home to Bharatpur after visiting his sister when the accident occurred. He was critically injured and admitted to AIIMS Gorakhpur, where he later died.
