Lucknow, Oct. 4 -- Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday announced a change of candidates for two teachers' constituencies in the upcoming Legislative Council elections as he inducted two leaders into the party and fielded them instead of the earlier nominees. Akash Agarwal, the sitting Member of the Legislative Council from the Agra Teachers' Constituency, and Sanjayan Tripathi, a BJP rebel who had filed his nomination papers as an independent on Thursday for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers' Constituency, formally joined the Samajwadi Party. Yadav declared their candidatures at a press conference. Agarwal will now contest from the Agra teachers' Constituency, replacing Prakash Chandra Gupta. Tripathi has been named the candidate for Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers' Constituency in place of Kamlesh Yadav. The party chief clarified that the switch was made with the consent of the previously announced candidates. Those who stepped aside, he added, would continue to be respected and given positions of honour at the appropriate time Meanwhile, Yadav said the party's forthcoming manifesto for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls would address farmers' issues, including loan relief. He asked why farmers could not receive similar support when loans of major capitalists were waived. The manifesto, he said, would also cover concerns of the youth, teachers, women and other sections. Speaking at the press conference at the SP headquarters here, Yadav criticised the BJP government over the state of education, alleging widespread paper leaks, discrimination against teachers, and the collapse of the examination system. He said the Samajwadi Party would include the demands of unaided teachers and Shiksha Mitras, along with the Old Pension Scheme, in its manifesto.
